Savings can often feel like an afterthought, right? I mean, we go through life paying bills and spending what we have, only to realize that saving is left in the dust. But hold up! What if we flipped that script? Imagine if savings came first instead of last. This chill chat dives into a game-changing habit called 'paying yourself first.' It’s all about prioritizing savings without the guilt trip. We’ve all been there, feeling like there’s never enough left over to save. But here’s the kicker: it doesn’t have to be a big amount. Just a small sum can shift your mindset from ‘I’ll get to it later’ to ‘this matters now.’ Let’s explore how this simple change can lead to a more peaceful relationship with money. After all, saving isn’t about being perfect; it’s about setting the right direction and priorities in life. We tackle some solid questions today - like how many of us actually treat savings like a priority rather than a luxury? Ralph, our friendly host, reminds us that life’s expenses will always find a way to eat into our leftover cash. That’s just life, right? But if we start saving first, we’re saying to our money, ‘Hey, you matter!’ This chat is filled with tips on how small, intentional savings can lead to big changes in our financial future. We also get into how consistency builds trust in ourselves and in the process. So let’s grab that financial confidence and make saving a non-negotiable part of our lives! And here's the twist: it’s not just about numbers. It’s about shifting our identity to become savers. When we start prioritizing savings, we’re not just saving money; we’re telling ourselves that our future is worth investing in. So whether it’s $10 or $100, the important part is to start somewhere. By the end of this episode, you’ll feel inspired to take that leap and make saving a priority, because, let’s face it, our future selves will thank us for it!

Takeaways:

  1. Savings should come first, not just what's left after paying bills and spending.
  2. Treating savings like a priority instead of an afterthought can change your financial game.
  3. Building trust in your savings starts with small, consistent steps, not huge amounts.
  4. When you save first, you're setting the stage for future success and financial peace.

What if savings didn't happen after everything else? What if it came first? Most of us were taught to spend what we need, pay what we owe, and save whatever might be left. And most months, let's be honest, there's not much left at all, friend. If savings keeps falling to the bottom of your list, you're not irresponsible. You just file in an order that makes savings feel optional. So today we're going to talk about a simple shift that helps savers actually win. When, without pressure or guilt, we're going to ask this question, the pay it yourself secret. How do savers build wealth? Hey, friend. Ralph Estep Jr.Here.Welcome to Financially Confident Christian, where we learn how to walk through life and money with wisdom, with peace, and with a heart anchored in God's truth. My mission is simple. To help you break the cycle of financial shame, build steady habits rooted in faith, and become the kind of believer who handles money with clarity, with confidence, and with spiritual purpose. Yesterday we talked about those emergency funds, that first layer of financial breathing room. And today we're going to build on that foundation with a habit that quietly changes everything. It's called paying yourself first. Not a rule, not pressure, but a priority.A listener once asked me, ralph, how am I supposed to save when I'm already feeling behind every month? And that question isn't about math, is it? It's about feeling like savings is always for later, for someday, for other people. But under that question is this feeling. I want to do better, but life keeps getting in the way. Ralph, savings feels extra when there's extra. It feels hard when every dollar already has a job. And, friend, that doesn't make you lack discipline. It means the order needs to change. Here's something research shows again and again, people who save first are far more consistent than people who try to save last. That's just facts. It's not because they're stronger. It's because they decide earlier in the process, and over the years, I've worked with people at every income level. The ones who found peace with money weren't perfect. They simply stopped treating savings like an afterthought and started treating it like a priority. That one change made everything feel lighter. I'll never forget. I remember somebody telling me, ralph, I started saving before I paid bills. It felt backwards, but they tried it anyway. Just a small automatic transfer. Now, nothing dramatic changed overnight, but their mindset did. They told me, ralph, for the first time, I feel like my future mattered. So here's today's general question. What would change if Your future came first instead of last. Let's talk about that.See, most people save what's left. Most people don't mean to avoid savings. They just live in this order. They spend first, the bills come first, everyone else first. And then maybe they have enough to save. But that maybe is a liar. Because life will always find a way to use up what's left. Hey, let's be honest with each other, right? There's always something. There's the sale at the store, somebody's birthday, a field trip for the kids that tire, a doctor bill, fast food night because you're exhausted after a long day. And the problem isn't that you're bad with money. The problem is the system is broken. If savings is less, guess what? Savings is optional. And optional things don't survive real life. This is the small shift that changes everything. You save first. Not huge, not dramatic, just first. You put it in front of the line.Because when you pay yourself first, you're telling your money, this matters. This is non negotiable. This is part of life now. This is my reality. Then you spend what's left over. You spend what remains. Not what you wish remained, but what actually remains. And here's what happens. Your lifestyle adjusts to your new priorities. That's why this works. Not because you suddenly become disciplined, but because the order is doing the work. That priority determines the outcome. See, this is about direction, not perfection. I want to say this clearly. It does not have to be a big amount. It just has to be intentional. If all you can save is $10 a week, start there. If you can do $25 per paycheck, start there. Hey, if you can do 1% right now, start there.Because the real win isn't the amount. It's the identity shift that's going on. You're becoming someone who saves, someone who plans, someone who prepares. And direction matters more than speed. Those small steps in the right direction still change your life. Because that consistency builds trust.Every time you save first, you're building trust. You're building trust in yourself. You're saying, I can keep a promise. You're building trust in the process. This is working, even if it's slow. And more importantly than that, you're building trust in God's provision. God is not asking me to be perfect. He's teaching me to be faithful. That consistency is how peace gets built. Not all at once, not overnight, but step by step, deposit by deposit, decision by decision. And over time, you look back and realize something. I'm not where I want to be. But I'm no longer where I was. See, that's growth. That's stewardship. That's a new story. Let's look at Matthew, chapter 6, verse 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Savings first isn't about fear. It's about alignment. It's about choosing what leads your life. How about we pray together? Lord, thank you for teaching us priorities in our life.Help us put first things first without fear and without pressure. Give us faith to save first and to trust you for vision. And we ask this in Jesus name, Amen. Here's today's I want you to set up an automatic transfer to savings before any bills are paid, even if it's small, and let consistency work for you, friend. Many listeners tell me this show feels safe.To them, it feels like a place where money struggles don't define their faith, where progress matters more than perfection. If that's what you're looking for, guess what? You're already home. And if you'd like to stay connected, to keep building steady habits, to get a little extra encouragement and to walk this out with other believers who are learning right alongside you, come join us. Come to financiallyconfidentchristian.com/join again. That's financiallyconfidentchristian.com/Join.That's where the community lives and I'd love to welcome you in. Let me leave you with this Saving isn't about being perfect. It's about choosing a direction.Tomorrow we're going to talk about why your future self will thank you for sinking funds. But today I want you to go be a financially confident Christian because I know you can do this. Stay financially savvy.God bless you and you have a great day today.
